Thinking About Getting a Dog? Adopt, Don't Shop!
Fishers,
Indiana: August 1, 2009 - Are
you considering getting a dog for your family or yourself?
If so, you should consider adopting from the Humane Society or
other "rescue" agency rather
than buying from a pet
store. Many pet stores get their dogs from puppy mills. Only
20% of pet dogs
are adopted, yet millions fill shelters every year, and many of those are
euthanized if not adopted.
The Humane Society of Indianapolis (HSI) is the leading voice for the
welfare of animals and improving their quality of life. Serving
Indianapolis and the surrounding counties since 1905, HSI treats all
Central Indiana animals with dignity and respect; to live free from
cruelty, harm and neglect. HSI provides vital services to animals and people alike
through sheltering and adopting animals, providing positive
reinforcement behavior training for both adoptable animals and owned
animals through public training classes, and outreach through their
community and shelter programs.
The Humane Society of Indianapolis receives animals from individuals
who are no longer able to care for their pet. Animals remain available
for adoption as long as their good health and behavior continue. All
animals that are available for adoption have passed an evaluation based
on their known history, health, and behavior. The adoption process can
take anywhere from 30 minutes to two hours depending on the information
needed from you and the number of pets going home at the same time.
Adoption prices range from $75 to $150 depending on species,
breed and age. The "Pets for People" program offers companion pets to
individuals 60 years of age and older at a reduced adoption fee. Seniors receive a discount of $50 off the adoption fee.
All HSI adoptions include:
- Health check
- Spay or Neuter
